MICR is an acronym for “Magnetic Ink Character Recognition” which refers to a specialized toner or ink used for printing the text at the bottom of checks and other negotiable documents including routing and account information. This magnetic toner or ink is required by all banks and The Federal Reserve when printing checks and other negotiable documents. Documents printed with MICR toner or ink will respond to a magnetic charge sent by processing machines allowing them to read the information contained within the MICR line of text. If printed without MICR toner or ink, a check or other negotiable document will be rejected as forfeit.
